Who would you go to for “Strategic” Market Research - in the UK market?

September 20th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

In the UK, if you needed to prepare a “Strategic” Market Research report for your Board (perhaps to include factors such as understanding existing market penetration, market potential, key attributes of existing clients, customer surveys, competitor analysis, customer profitability, etc) and you did not have the internal resources, who would you trust to do this work for you and why?

Depending on the market information you require, BSRIA could also be quite a good source of information. They are really centered on the buidling environment. They alos have some good information into the European market on certain topics.
I have used some of their reports in the past when dealing with structured cabling market in Europe and it proved to be quite on the ball.
Hope it helps.

What aspect of your company’s culture do you value most?

September 20th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

With my long commute, it would have to be the schedule flexibility. There would be a close tie for second place between relaxed dress code (suits, jeans or anything in between) and opportunities to meet film actors (and make my family jealous).

I believe there are certain values which are universal in nature irrespective of geographic, cultural or communal bondaries. In the emerging borderless global community and global business fuelled by globalization and technology, the core values will be the key to success of global corporations.

Practising such eternal values which encourage the people to contribute towards the larger goals of the society can lead to extremely fulfilling professional life and thereby corporate success too.

If we think of what comes first to our mind when we think of a great company that reflects the true value that company stands for……..be it Apple for Creativity, Toyota for Quality, Sony for Innovation, and so on.

The true purpose of an organization is reflected through the mission statement. Defining a socially responsible purpose and living for that purpose and dovetailing the operational values into the mission of the organization is the most important value. This steers the entire organization towards the common shared value that creates immense value for all the stakeholders

Are you (or your company) using prediction markets to make better business decisions?

September 20th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

For a major article in a specialized business magazine, I am writing an article about the use of prediction markets in business. While I have access to a few cases, I would naturally like to use as many cases as possible — successes and misfires.

Particularly interested in how you/your company uses prediction markets — internal, external, customers, etc, and what seems to work most effectively.

Great to see you are writing an article on a revolutionary methodology that is really gaining traction and reinventing the MR industry. The WSJ wrote an interesting article this week on Best Buy and how they use it for revenue forecasting.

James Surowiki’s fantastic book The Wisdom of Crowds inspired our company BrainJuicer to create an ESOMAR award winning market research methodology for concept screening that embraces and leverages the “wisdom of crowds”.

Companies gain real value in the “fuzzy front end” of the innovation funnel when they employ this methodology with consumers. Traditional methodologies for concept screening in the front end of innovation can deliver less than expository results for what is often a costly and time consuming investment. We conduct “predictive market” studies with consumers to help marketers, innovation and NPD teams unlock and inject “wisdom of crowds” into their decision making processes. With such a high percentage of new products failing, predictive markets are proving to be a remarkable way for companies to proceed confidently and quickly at the Front End to accelerate and improve their innovation process.

A recently completed meta analysis of 215 concepts using our predictive markets approach versus traditional monadic testing has shown that predictive markets are as accurate, more differentiating and sensitive in identifying concepts that are leading edge; ahead of their time or may constitute breakthrough ideas in niche markets.

Which CEO and/or company represents authentic leadership to you and why?

September 20th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

In my book “True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership”, I present a concrete and comprehensive program for leadership success based on face-to-face research and interviews with 125 of today’s top authentic leaders.

In your opinion, which CEO and/or company represents authentic leadership and why?

Bill George is a featured speaker at the World Business Forum on September 23rd and 24th in New York City.

My choice would be Richard Branson, leader of England’s Virgin Groups. Richard had the foresight to work green years before it was in a company’s best advantage; has the intelligence not to have his workers all look like cookie cutter clones of the WASP business image; and also has the courage to venture into areas that he may not perform well at, but is willing to take the risk to advance his and his company’s and employee’s best interests and image.

While I do not have any specific people or companies to identify, let me say that some of the criteria identified by Jim Collins in Good to Great would meet the test of authentic leadership. Examples of that criteria include: humility, acting as a servant leader, being able to accept brutal honesty, availability, a willingness to share credit (ideally, give full credit to others) and take sole responsibility and blame for failures. Actually, one such person does come to mind - John Beckett from the Beckett Oil Burner Co. in Ohio. From what I know about him (having interviewed him for a leadership book I was working on) and from reading more about him, I believe he demonstrates many if not all of the criteria mentioned above.

Coffes shops, Internet Cafes. What is the current status of this biz?

September 20th, 2008 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Starbucks is closing many locations. Just overbuilt? Are the local coffee shops growing? Other chains?

Seems they all need to provide internet access, some WiFi minimally. Free? Free with purchase for a limited time? Paid access as an additional revenue stream?

What about available terminals/ PCs?

I think Coffee shops will move towards targeted advertising to its customers. 40 Million people visiting startbucks every week, provides a large incentive to create a Ad based revenue stream. Also, since it is more targeted to local customers, they might prefer to sell products that can create impulse purchases. All in all, with winter coming, coffee sales will go up. Also, these coffee shops can provide internet access free, provided people are willing to be regular members and focus on creating local hot spots for meet and greet.

Though I’ve not seen any Starbucks going out of business or closing here, I can see how they could be too saturated in a market. There seems to be a coffee shop every time you turn around. I know of five Starbucks locations within 2.5 miles of my house.

I think the places that provide free WiFi, or limited free time with purchase are the ones that will survive over ones that charge for them.

I would go to Peet’s because I like their coffee better!! But it is 10 miles away and Starbucks is only 0.5 miles away. With gas prices the way they are and the convenience, I’ll stick to the close by location.

Use Balanced Scoreard and take the answer on this question.
